HERE expands its leading real-time traffic coverage to 50 countries

Berlin, Germany – HERE, a Nokia company, today announced that it is expanding its real-time traffic service to 50 countries, from the current 44.

Next month, HERE will add Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar to a growing footprint of live traffic data in the Middle East, giving it the most comprehensive traffic coverage in the Gulf region today. In addition, HERE just expanded its European coverage by adding Bulgaria and Romania.

“The expansion of HERE’s traffic coverage to 50 countries confirms its position as one of the key global players in the traffic market,” said Stephen Longden, the author of automotive consultancy SBD’s annual Traffic Guide. “The Middle East in particular is a hot spot for connected car activities and has seen strong growth of navigation and traffic services.”

“In addition to traffic, HERE is leading the way in the rise of additional non-traffic information that impacts on in-car navigation,” added Longden. “Data on factors like parking availability, fuel prices, EV charging points and the weather are being offered by HERE for use by in-car navigation and infotainment systems.”

In addition to the broader HERE Real Time Traffic coverage, HERE continues to add innovative features to enhance the product, including reversible express lane coverage and traffic safety warnings.

HERE Real Time Traffic is the only traffic service on the market today that updates the direction of traffic flow on metropolitan reversible express lanes, allowing drivers to make more intelligent routing choices.

Traffic safety warnings prompt drivers to slow down in anticipation of a quickly building traffic jam ahead, often before it becomes visible.

“HERE Real Time Traffic is the most comprehensive, global traffic service commercially available on the market today,” said Tony Belkin, Director of Traffic and Dynamic Content for HERE. “With HERE Real Time Traffic, Predictive Traffic, Traffic Patterns and Analytics, HERE is clearly leading the industry in advanced traffic content and services.”

HERE Real Time Traffic provides up-to-the-minute information about current traffic conditions and incidents that could cause delays, including slower than normal traffic flow, road works and accidents. It then helps drivers make the best decision about the rest of the journey by improving the accuracy of arrival times.

To ensure the information is available 24 hours a day, real-time data are collected and updated every 60 seconds from a broad range of sources, including billions of speed probes taken from cars and mobile devices every day. HERE offers 100% coverage of roads with pinpoint accuracy down to 10-metres when traffic data are combined with HERE’s industry-leading map.

HERE traffic data are built on a highly intelligent traffic engine that incorporates advanced routing technologies, analytics, predictive services and the input of a highly trained traffic monitoring team. HERE also has the largest delivery portfolio in the industry, offering the most ways to get traffic to its customers – whether over radio broadcast channels or web connections.

Microsoft’s Windows App Studio and TouchDevelop integrate. Mobile First. Cloud first.

Windows App Studio Beta today released its most impactful update since the move to universal Windows apps last April. Many of you have already tried TouchDevelop, a powerful, touch-friendly programming language that includes a physics engine, a UI framework to compose forms for quick data display and entry and much more. With TouchDevelop you can write code directly on any device and use sensors and media via high-level APIs. With this integration, developers will gain access to the hundreds of thousands of TouchDevelop apps and games, improving the quality and complexity of apps created with Windows App Studio. You will also notice 3 other major updates in today’s release.

Windows App Studio adds TouchDevelop as a data source

With today’s release Windows App Studio has added the ability to import TouchDevelop apps and games as a data source. App Studio users can now add single or multiple TouchDevelop sections to add richer features to their apps. With just a few clicks select TouchDevelop scripts are imported into App Studio, ready to generate an AppX package to sideload on any phone, tablet, or PC running Windows 8.1 or publish to Windows Phone or Windows Store. For this first release not all Apps and Games from TouchDevelop can be imported into App Studio including those that include web requests and access the devices capabilities (e.g. Bluetooth, Calendar). You can test functionality by copying your script ID into the TouchDevelop DataSource in App Studio, which will verify whether it can be imported.

TouchDevelop will allow you to import your script into App Studio if it is a supported scenario

Take a look at SocialSki, which brings in snow condition feeds and updated information on Vermont ski resorts from App Studio and adds a quiz game for skiers from TouchDevelop. Will you add social feeds to your TouchDevelop game or maybe calculators and translators to your App Studio projects? The possibilities are endless.

Windows App Studio adds universal Web App Template (WAT) creation

You can now create a universal Web App Template (WAT) application that will run on any phone, PC, or tablet running Windows 8.1. This is a great option for website owners who want to package a mobile-optimized website into a universal application to publish to Windows and Window Phone Store.

Changes in Windows App Studio support for Windows Phone 8.0

As you have noted from the large banner on the App Studio homepage over the last month, we are changing the App Studio support structure for Windows Phone 8.0 apps.   You will continue to have access to all of your Windows Phone 8.0 apps created via ‘My Projects’ and ‘Last Versions’ on the Generation page. However, if you want to make changes to your 8.0 versions you will need to do so using Visual Studio 2013. Moving forward editing and updating apps within App Studio, as well as the creation of new apps, will be limited to universal Windows apps targeting devices running Windows 8.1.

Generated Code Improvements

Finally, with this release you’ll notice that we have updated the code generation/build/sign workflow to give you enhanced feedback about the background process that run your code generation and compilation tasks.

We also updated the build platform to use the latest version of our free developer tool, Visual Studio Community Edition 2013, which allows you to extend app created in Windows App Studio.

We’re excited to see what our 2.3 million Windows App Studio users think about the release and welcome the over 250,000 registered TouchDevelop users to this new integrated app building tool. With this advancement, we expect high quality applications and the opportunity for App Studio users to significantly expand their development skills.

Nokia Announces N1 Android Tablet

Simplicity and design at the heart of Nokia’s first brand-licensed product

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced the N1, the first Nokia-branded AndroidTM tablet. The N1 offers the innovative, predictive Nokia Z Launcher interface, and a carefully crafted industrial design by Nokia with a focus on simplicity. The N1 will be brought to market in Q1 2015 through a brand-licensing agreement with an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partner responsible for manufacturing, distribution and sales.

“We are pleased to bring the Nokia brand back into consumers’ hands with the N1 Android tablet, and to help make sophisticated technologies simple,” said Sebastian Nyström, Head of Products at Nokia Technologies, who announced the N1 at the Slush technology conference in Helsinki. “The N1 has a delightfully intuitive interface and an industrial design to match it. This is a great product for Nokia fans and everyone who has not found the right Android tablet yet.”

Consumers use and manage a large set of applications in their digital lives. The N1 makes that easy with the Z Launcher, which allows users to scribble a letter or two to find their content quickly. Over time the Z Launcher learns what applications are in use, and predicts and highlights the applications consumers are expected to want based on time of day and location.

The industrial design of the N1 is deliberately developed to match the elegant simplicity of the interface. It has a unique one-piece aluminum design with a soft finish in both Lava Grey and Natural Aluminum colors that make it stand out from other tablets. The 7.9″ laminated display sits in a 6.9mm thin and light design that makes the device comfortable to hold even with one hand. A 2.4Ghz Intel© AtomTM quad-core processor provides great performance for the Android Lollipop operating system on the N1.

The N1 is planned to be available for purchase in China in Q1 2015 for an estimated USD 249 before taxes, with the anticipation of expanding sales to other markets.

In addition to the Nokia brand, Nokia is licensing the industrial design, Z Launcher software layer and IP on a running royalty basis to the OEM partner. The OEM partner is responsible for full business execution, from engineering and sales to customer care, including liabilities and warranty costs, inbound IP and software licensing and contractual agreements with 3rd parties.

The N1’s industrial design and Z Launcher application originate within the Nokia Technologies business, which is focused on strengthening Nokia’s industry-leading innovation portfolio through patent, technology and brand licensing.
